Chapter 7 - The Archive of Sins

The timer on the wall began its silent, ruthless descent. Three minutes before the security seals closed the sub-level completely. Nora forced the brass key into the mechanical slot beneath the digital biometric scanner. With a sharp, heavy twist, the brass tumblers clicked into place, bypassing the electronic failsafe. The heavy vault door hissed open with a release of stale, chilled air.

Inside lay rows of metal filing cabinets, untouched for decades. This was where the founding families had stored private pacts, off-the-record mergers, and personal liabilities long before the digital era. Nora ran her fingers along the index tabs, scanning for her family’s name: Vandermeer Biotech.

She found the drawer near the back corner. Pulling it open, her fingers brushed against a thick, leather-bound folder bearing her father's familiar handwriting. But beneath it lay a second document, sealed with the Sterling crest and stamped with Eleanor Sterling's private notary mark dated twenty-two years ago.

Curiosity overrode caution. She tore open the wax seal and scanned the top page. Her breath caught in her throat.

It was not a business merger. It was an adoption covenant and an NDA.

The document clearly stated that Julian Sterling was not Eleanor’s biological son, nor was he the legal heir to the Sterling lineage. He was the son of an impoverished branch relative, adopted secretly after Eleanor's infant son died of complications, orchestrated solely to keep the family trust from reverting to the state charity fund. Under the terms of the original family charter, an adopted heir had no legal claim to the Vandermeer patents or the family estate unless ratified by the board's founder—Nora's father.

Julian’s entire existence, his pedigree, his arrogance, and his legal claim to everything he possessed were built on a forged birth certificate.

The vault door behind her began to swing shut. Nora snatched both dossiers, dove through the narrowing gap, and rolled across the polished concrete floor just as the locking bolts slammed into place.
