Chapter 2 - The Safe Harbor

The car pulled into the nondescript parking lot of a salt-crusted maritime warehouse at Pier 42. Nora stepped out, pulling her coat tighter against the brackish gust rolling off the gray water. Waiting near the rusted steel doors stood Arthur Vance, her late father’s trusted corporate attorney. Arthur was a silver-haired man whose sharp eyes missed nothing; he had spent forty years dismantling fraudulent corporate empires, yet today, his posture was unusually rigid.
""You're late, Nora,"" Arthur said without greeting, guiding her through a narrow service entryway into a private, climate-controlled office overlooking the shipping docks.
""Julian made a scene at the foyer,"" she answered smoothly, setting her handbag on the heavy mahogany desk. ""He wanted an audience. Eleanor made sure the staff was watching. I let them perform.""
Arthur opened a battered leather portfolio and slid a stack of forensic financial audits across the surface. ""They were eager to throw you out today for a reason. Julian didn't just hide twelve million dollars from your joint marital account. That was the decoy."" Arthur tapped a yellowed document bearing her late father’s embossed seal. ""The prenuptial agreement Julian had you sign four years ago was legally tethered to the founding patents of your father's bio-tech firm. The moment you are declared 'in default of marital cohabitation' for more than twenty-four hours, the voting rights to the entire board transfer automatically to Sterling Holdings.""
Nora stared at the clause, feeling the blood drain from her face. Julian hadn’t merely grown tired of their marriage; he had engineered this eviction on this exact date to legally seize her family's legacy before sundown tomorrow.
""So my departure wasn't just his arrogance,"" Nora whispered, a cold rage blooming behind her ribs. ""It was an ambush.""
May you like
""Precisely,"" Arthur said grimly. ""And to finalize the board transfer, Julian needs one final signature—a document currently sitting inside the central vault of Sterling Trust. If we don't intercept it before 9:00 AM tomorrow, your father's life work belongs to him.""
Before Nora could answer, the security monitor on Arthur's desk flickered. A convoy of three black SUVs was rolling slowly past the warehouse gate.
