Chapter 5 - The Sister in Exile

The private marina at Oakridge was quiet, blanketed by a low-hanging fog that concealed the sleek white hulls of luxury yachts. Waiting beneath a wooden gazebo was Elena Sterling. Clad in a leather motorcycle jacket and dark jeans, Elena looked nothing like the polished socialites her mother Eleanor cultivated. She exhaled a stream of cigarette smoke into the cold air as Nora climbed the dock stairs.

""You finally did it,"" Elena said, her voice gravelly and devoid of pity. ""Took you long enough to realize my brother is a tapeworm in a Brioni suit.""

""Arthur was taken,"" Nora said without ceremony, holding Elena’s gaze. ""Richard picked him up at Pier 42. They want the briefcase.""

Elena dropped the cigarette and crushed it beneath her boot heel. ""Julian is desperate. His venture capital arm took a massive short position against European logistics last month, and the market rebounded. He’s underwater for nearly eighty million. He needs your father’s patent portfolio liquidated by the end of the week, or the lenders will freeze the Sterling estate entirely.""

Nora’s eyes darkened. ""So the house, Eleanor's jewelry, the servants... it's all leveraged?""

""Every last chandelier,"" Elena scoffed. ""He tossed you out today because he couldn't afford to let you discover the foreclosure warnings hidden in the master study. If you file for divorce first on grounds of fraud, the patents are locked in probate, and Julian goes to federal prison.""

Nora opened her hand, revealing the miniature brass key. ""My father left me this. It belongs to the central vault at Sterling Trust.""

Elena’s eyes widened slightly, the first hint of genuine shock cracking her stoic demeanor. ""That isn't a safe deposit box key, Nora. That’s the master override for the subterranean archive beneath the bank. And there is something down there Julian has been hunting for ten years.""
