Chapter 6 - The Glass Fortress

Sterling Trust rose forty stories above the financial district, a monolith of black glass and reflective steel that projected invincibility. Under normal circumstances, entering after trading hours required five levels of biometrics and board-level clearance. But Elena had spent her youth learning the building's architecture before her mother purged her from the family registers.
Sitting in the back of Elena's tinted crossover two blocks away, Nora reviewed the floor plan displayed on an encrypted tablet.
""The main vault is automated after 6:00 PM,"" Elena explained, pointing to a ventilation conduit connecting the subterranean parking structure to the historical archive. ""Julian will be in his penthouse on the top floor waiting for you to deliver Arthur’s briefcase like an obedient dog. He won't expect you to walk into the belly of the beast.""
""What about Arthur?"" Nora asked, the guilt tightening around her throat.
""Julian won't touch him until the deadline passes,"" Elena replied coldly. ""Arthur is his only bargaining chip. If we retrieve the founding ledger from the archive, Julian holds zero leverage. The board will vote to remove him by midnight.""
Nora adjusted the lapels of her coat, slipping the brass key into her palm. She looked at her reflection in the dark glass of the car window. The gentle, apologetic wife who endured Eleanor's subtle insults at society luncheons had vanished. In her place stood an adversary forged in the crucible of five years of emotional attrition.
""Get me inside,"" Nora said.

Ten minutes later, dressed in a maintenance uniform provided by Elena's contacts, Nora slipped through the service basement of Sterling Trust. The hum of industrial air chillers vibrated through the concrete walls. She bypassed the first checkpoint using a cloned magnetic badge, stepping into the dim, pressurized corridor leading down to the deepest tier of the bank.
At the end of the hall stood the heavy steel door of Vault 4. But as Nora raised the brass key to the lock, the overhead lights flashed amber, and an automated voice chimed: Manual override initiated. Lockdown in three minutes.
