Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the Legacy

Two months passed before the dust truly settled. The name Sterling was formally removed from the downtown bio-tech research complex, replaced by the original, restored brass lettering: Vandermeer Institute of Medical Science.
Nora spent her mornings in the high-ceilinged laboratories her father had designed, working alongside scientists whose funding had been restored the moment Julian's shell corporations were liquidated. She found an unexpected peace in the precise, honest language of clinical data and test tubes—a clean world where truth could not be forged by clever lawyers or concealed behind pearl necklaces.
Arthur Vance dropped by her new office on a crisp winter afternoon. He was holding a freshly bound leather portfolio.
""The divorce decree is final, Nora,"" he said, placing the document gently on her desk. ""Signed by the presiding judge this morning. You are officially Nora Vandermeer again. Independent, debt-free, and sole owner of your father's estate.""
Nora traced the raised gold lettering on the cover of the decree. A quiet exhale escaped her lips, carrying away the last remnants of the tension she had carried in her shoulders for five years.
""How is Eleanor?"" Nora asked, surprising herself with the question.
""Living in a modest two-bedroom rental in upstate New York, funded by a restricted stipend from Elena,"" Arthur replied dryly. ""She tried to appeal the eviction last week, claiming emotional distress. The appellate judge threw it out within five minutes.""
""And Julian?""
""Transferred to the federal penitentiary in Allenwood yesterday morning. He has twelve years to think about what he gave away.""

Nora nodded, closing the folder without opening it. The past had finally been balanced like a clean ledger. She stood up and walked to the window, watching the snow fall gently over the city streets below.
""Let's get to work, Arthur,"" she said, turning back with a bright, genuine smile. ""We have lost years to make up for.""
