Chapter 11 - The Clearing Mist

By late afternoon, the Sterling estate was silent once more. The moving vans carrying Eleanor’s personal trunks had departed under court supervision. The endless procession of sycophants, lawyers, and domestic staff had cleared out, leaving the limestone mansion strangely hollow, its grand echo stripped of malice.
Nora walked through the vast rooms alone. The opulent portraits of Sterling ancestors lining the grand gallery suddenly looked like nothing more than faded oil on cheap linen. For years, she had felt suffocated within these walls, believing that her inadequacy was the cause of her husband's cruelty and her mother-in-law's contempt. Now, walking the polished parquet floors, she realized the truth: they were hollow pretenders, terrified that the world would notice their empty vault.
She met Elena in the estate’s glass conservatory. Rain drummed steadily against the slanted panes, but inside, the air was warm and smelled of damp moss and blooming jasmine.
""The board approved the restructuring an hour ago,"" Elena said, handing Nora a signed ledger. ""Vandermeer Biotech is officially decoupled from Sterling Holdings. The patents are restored to your name. Julian’s creditors can't touch a single penny.""
""What about you, Elena?"" Nora asked, looking at the sister who had traded luxury for truth years ago. ""The estate is technically yours now, under the legitimate will.""

Elena laughed, a short, self-deprecating sound. ""Sell it. Turn it into a research park, knock it down, or burn it. I don't want a single brick that mother touched. I'm going back to the coast."" She looked at Nora with a rare warmth in her eyes. ""You surprised me, kid. When you walked out that door yesterday, I thought you were done.""
""I was done,"" Nora said, watching a single droplet slide down the glass. ""Done being polite.""
