Chapter 10 - The Calm After the Storm

Two weeks had passed since the night the Vance estate burned and Richard Sterling was carted off to a federal penitentiary. The upper floors of the mansion were already undergoing reconstruction, but the lower level and the private garden courtyard had been completely restored to their pristine, tranquil beauty.
Clara stood by the marble fountain in the courtyard, letting the cool water wash over her fingertips. The bruises on her arms had vanished entirely, and the gash on her leg had healed into a faint, thin scar. She was no longer wearing the black-and-white maid's uniform; instead, she wore a simple, elegant emerald-green dress that Alexander had quietly had tailored for her.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel pathway behind her. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
""You shouldn't be standing on your feet for too long,"" Alexander said gently, coming to a stop beside her. He held a cup of coffee in one hand, his suit jacket draped over his arm.
Clara smiled, turning to face him. ""I'm fine, Alexander. Really. The doctor cleared me yesterday.""
Alexander looked down at her, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips—a smile that only she ever got to see. ""Good. Because I have a proposition for you.""
Clara raised an eyebrow, a playful spark in her hazel eyes. ""Another one? Last time your propositions involved underground bunkers and armed mercenaries.""
Alexander chuckled softly, shaking his head. ""No mercenaries this time. Marcus wrapped up all the remaining litigation this morning. Vance Global is completely restructured, and my position as CEO is secure. But... the estate feels entirely too empty.""
Clara’s breath caught slightly. ""Alexander...""
""I don't want you working as my maid anymore, Clara,"" he said, his voice dropping lower, turning intensely serious as he stepped closer. ""I want you to stay here as my equal. As my partner. Vance Global needs a new director of philanthropic outreach—someone with real compassion, someone who knows what it means to survive the dark.""
Clara stared at him, tears welling in her eyes, but her heart felt lighter than it had in her entire life. All the pain, all the fear, all the years of abuse under Derek Loss felt like a lifetime away. Here, standing in the sunlight with the man who had torn down an empire to protect her, she had finally found her true home.
""I would like that more than anything,"" she whispered.
May you like
Alexander reached out, taking her face gently in his hands, and leaned down, capturing her lips in a tender, lingering kiss that sealed their new beginning.
Far above them, the sky was clear and bright, stretching out endlessly into a future unburdened by the past.
