Chapter 3 - Smoke and Mirrors

The shockwave of the explosion rattled the mansion’s crystal chandeliers, sending glass shards raining down into the grand foyer. In the master suite, Clara screamed, crawling desperately toward the doorway to find Alexander. Smoke began to billow up the grand staircase, thick and acrid, obscuring the hallway in a suffocating gray haze.

Through the haze, Alexander stood his ground, but Derek Loss was gone—vanished into the smoke like a ghost.

""Alexander!"" Clara coughed, dragging her injured body across the threshold of the bathroom.

Alexander rushed back into the suite, dropping his weapon into his holster as he scooped Clara up into his arms effortlessly. She gasped, burying her face against his chest as the heat from the hallway intensified. ""I've got you,"" he murmured, his voice cutting through the panic. ""We’re getting out of here.""

He carried her past the smoking doorway toward the private emergency elevator hidden behind the mahogany bookshelf. Punching in a security code with one hand while holding her tightly with the other, the heavy steel doors slid open, revealing a private panic room shaft descending deep into the bedrock beneath the foundation of the house.

As the elevator doors sealed shut, cutting off the smoke and noise, Clara looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears and disbelief. ""Why are you doing this? You don't even know me. I’m just a maid.""

Alexander pressed a button to initiate the descent, his jaw clenched as he looked down at her wounded leg, where blood was still seeping through a makeshift bandage he had tied earlier. ""You're under my roof, Clara. And nobody hurts my people and walks away.""

The elevator descended into subterranean quietness, opening up into a high-tech bunker equipped with medical supplies, monitors displaying live camera feeds of the burning estate above, and an armory of advanced security systems. Alexander gently set her down on a leather medical cot, instantly going to work on disinfecting and stitching her wounded leg with clinical precision.

Clara hissed in pain, gripping the edges of the cot, but she didn't pull away. She watched the intense, focused expression on his face. ""Derek... he won't stop. He has connections everywhere. Police, politicians... he owns half the city.""

Alexander finished tying off the medical thread and looked up, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying confidence. ""Let him own the city. This is my empire.""

On the main security monitor above them, the thermal cameras suddenly flickered to life. A dozen masked men in tactical gear were swarming through the wreckage of the mansion, and right at the front, holding a walkie-talkie, was Derek Loss—smirking directly at the hidden perimeter lens.
