Chapter 11 - Whispers of the Past

The evening air in the courtyard was crisp, carrying the faint scent of blooming jasmine and wet earth. Inside the newly renovated study, the fireplace crackled with a warm, steady glow, casting long dancing shadows across the mahogany bookshelves.

Clara sat by the window, skimming through a stack of architectural blueprints for the estate's new west wing. Her life had transformed completely over the past month. No longer hiding in the shadows of abuse or running from the ghosts of her marriage to Derek Loss, she was stepping confidently into her new role as the director of Vance Global’s philanthropic foundation.

The heavy oak door opened quietly, and Alexander walked in carrying two crystal glasses filled with amber bourbon. He handed one to Clara before taking a seat in the velvet armchair opposite her.

""Working late?"" Alexander asked, his dark eyes reflecting the warm firelight.

""Just reviewing the plans for the new women's shelter we're funding downtown,"" Clara replied, taking a small sip of the bourbon. She smiled faintly, though a shadow of lingering sadness crossed her face. ""Sometimes... it still feels like a dream. Like I'm going to wake up and still be trapped in that house with him.""

Alexander set his glass down on the table, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. He reached across the space, taking her hand in his strong, steady grip. ""You're never going back there, Clara. Derek is locked in a maximum-security federal penitentiary three states away. He will never be able to touch you, see you, or even say your name again.""

Clara squeezed his hand, drawing strength from his unwavering presence. ""I know. It's just... scars take time to fade, inside and out.""

""Take all the time you need,"" Alexander said softly. ""I'm not going anywhere.""

Before Clara could answer, a sharp, piercing chime echoed from the smart-console on Alexander’s desk. It wasn't a standard corporate notification; it was an encrypted priority alert linked directly to Marcus’s federal database.

Alexander stood up immediately, walking over to the console. He tapped the biometric scanner, and a secure holographic transmission flickered to life.

Marcus's face appeared on the screen, looking graver than Alexander had ever seen him.

""Alex,"" Marcus said without preamble. ""We have a massive problem. You need to look at the transfer logs from Derek Loss's prison account.""

Alexander’s expression hardened instantly. ""What are you talking about? He's locked down 24/7.""

""Not anymore,"" Marcus replied grimly. ""An hour ago, Derek didn't escape... someone broke into the facility and smuggled him out. And the financial backer funding his extraction isn't Richard Sterling. It's someone much closer to home.""
