Chapter 8 - The Corporate Serpent

The private conference room of Vance Global Industries was entirely soundproofed, its floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering a panoramic view of the city skyline. But inside, the atmosphere was as cold as a tomb.
Alexander sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, his fingers steepled beneath his chin as he stared down at the decrypted financial logs projected on the smart screen. Marcus stood beside the projector, tapping a digital stylus against a highlighted transaction trail originating from an offshore account.
""The money didn't come from Derek's underground contacts,"" Marcus explained, his voice grim. ""It came directly from an internal subsidiary account controlled right here within Vance Global. Someone inside our executive board has been funding Derek’s private operations to destabilize your holdings.""
Clara, who was sitting quietly in the corner of the room wrapped in a blanket, felt a cold knot form in her stomach. She had seen things while cleaning the executive suites—documents left carelessly on desks, whispered phone calls late at night.
""Who?"" Alexander asked, his voice dangerously low.
Marcus swiped to the next slide, revealing a high-resolution photograph of the executive vice president, Richard Sterling—Alexander’s closest confidant and co-founder of the firm.
""Richard,"" Marcus said flatly. ""He used Derek to intimidate employees, acquire land illegally, and undermine your authority while you were distracted with expanding the European market.""
Alexander didn't flinch. His face remained an impassive mask of stone, but the muscles in his jaw ticked violently. Richard had been his brother-in-arms for over a decade. He had trusted him with his life.
""He knew about Clara,"" Alexander murmured, the realization dawning with terrifying clarity. ""Derek didn't just stumble upon her. Richard used her as leverage, or worse... placed her here to spy on me.""
""No!"" Clara stood up from her chair, the blanket slipping to the floor as she stepped toward the table. ""No, Mr. Vance—Alexander, I swear to you, I didn't know anything about this! I was just hired through an agency six months ago. I didn't know Richard, I never even saw him!""
Alexander turned his head slowly, looking at her wide, panicked eyes. He could see the absolute truth in her face, stripped bare of any deception. He stood up, walking over to her and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
""I know you didn't, Clara,"" Alexander said firmly, his voice cutting through her panic. ""I trust you.""
Before Clara could exhale her relief, the heavy oak doors of the conference room swung open with a loud bang.

Richard Sterling walked in, flanked by two armed corporate security guards, wearing a calm, arrogant smile as he adjusted his titanium-rimmed glasses.
""Well, well, well,"" Richard chuckled, clapping his hands slowly. ""It looks like the family reunion came a little early. Too bad you won't live long enough to enjoy it, Alex.""
