Chapter 7 - Sanctuary Restored

The morning sun broke over the charred remains of the Vance estate, casting a golden light through the shattered windows of the upper floor. Outside, emergency vehicles flashed their red and blue lights, while federal agents cordoned off the perimeter, carting away Derek Loss and his remaining men in handcuffs.
Down in the subterranean medical suite, the air was warm and quiet. Clara sat on the edge of the leather cot, wearing a clean, oversized cashmere sweater that belonged to Alexander. Her leg was neatly bandaged, and the bruising on her arms was beginning to fade under the care of a private doctor Marcus had brought down.
Alexander walked into the room carrying a steaming mug of tea, setting it gently on the small metal table beside her. He looked tired, the sharp edges of his usual corporate armor softened by the exhausting events of the past twenty-four hours.
""How is your leg?"" Alexander asked, leaning against the edge of the desk.
""It hurts less,"" Clara replied softly, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. She looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of awe and profound gratitude. ""I heard what happened. Marcus... your brother... he said Derek is facing federal charges that will keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.""
""Marcus has a way of making sure violent criminals never see daylight again,"" Alexander said quietly. He looked at her, his expression softening further. ""You're safe now, Clara. No one will ever touch you again.""
Clara lowered her gaze, a tear slipping down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't from fear. ""I don't even know how to thank you. You risked your home, your life... for a maid you barely knew.""
Alexander pushed off the desk, stepping closer until he stood right in front of her. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. ""You were never just a maid, Clara. From the moment you walked into this house, you brought something into my life I didn't even know I was missing.""
Clara’s breath hitched. She looked up into his deep, intense eyes, seeing a warmth there that he hid from the rest of the world.

Before either of them could speak, the secure comms panel on the wall beeped softly, flashing a high-priority encrypted message from Marcus upstairs: “Alex, we found something in Derek’s encrypted phone. He wasn't acting alone. There's someone else inside your corporation financing him.”
Alexander’s expression instantly hardened, the protective sanctuary they had just built suddenly casting a cold shadow once again.
