Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

The federal courthouse in downtown was surrounded by a sea of media vans, journalists, and flashing camera lights. The downfall of Julian Vance and Derek Loss marked the end of an era of corporate corruption and domestic terror that had plagued the city for years.
Inside the massive courtroom, the judge’s gavel struck the wooden block with a sharp, final crack.
""Julian Vance, for counts of corporate espionage, conspiracy, and attempted murder, this court sentences you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Derek Loss, for aggravated stalking, assault, and terrorism, you are sentenced to consecutive life terms.""
Derek let out a furious, animalistic roar as federal marshals grabbed him by the arms, dragging him kicking and screaming out of the courtroom. Julian Vance remained silent, his face a mask of bitter defeat as he was led away in chains.
Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, resting her hand gently on Alexander’s arm. The weight that had crushed her spirit for so long finally evaporated into nothingness. She was completely, unconditionally free.
Alexander stood up, offering his hand to her. ""Come on,"" he whispered softly. ""Let's go home.""
As they stepped out of the courthouse doors, the blinding flash of cameras greeted them. Journalists shouted questions from every direction: ""Mr. Vance, what's next for Vance Global?"" ""Miss Clara, how does it feel to see your tormentor put away?""
Alexander didn't stop for interviews. He wrapped a protective arm around Clara’s waist, shielding her from the flashing lights and guiding her smoothly toward the waiting black town car.
Once the heavy doors of the car sealed shut, cutting off the noise of the outside world, Clara leaned her head against Alexander’s shoulder, letting out a long, contented sigh.
""It's really over, isn't it?"" she asked softly.

Alexander kissed the top of her head, his arm tightening around her. ""It's over. And we can finally start our real life.""
The town car pulled away from the curb, merging into the flowing traffic of the city under a brilliant, cloudless afternoon sky.
