Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Catacombs

The subterranean catacombs beneath the Vance estate were a labyrinth of old stone, damp brick, and modern high-security conduits. Alexander moved through the darkness like a predator in its natural habitat. He had designed this estate block by block; every shadow was an ally, every echo a weapon.

In the wine cellar, the second mercenary spun around, raising his assault rifle, but Alexander was already gone, melting back into the shadows of the vaulted brick ceiling.

""Bravado Two, report,"" Derek’s voice hissed over the mercenary's comm-link. ""Bravado Two, do you copy?""

The mercenary swallowed hard, his flashlight beam trembling as he swept the rows of vintage French wine racks. ""Boss... Bravado One is offline. Something's in here with me.""

""Find him and rip his head off!"" Derek roared through the speaker.

Before the mercenary could pivot, a heavy steel wire wrapped around his throat from behind, jerking him violently backward into the darkness. He choked out a single gurgled gasp before his body went limp, lowered silently to the stone floor by Alexander.

Alexander retrieved the fallen mercenary's encrypted tactical radio, clipping it onto his vest. He pressed the transmission button just enough to emit a faint click, letting Derek know he was listening.

Upstairs in the ruined foyer, Derek slammed his fist against a charred pillar. ""Vance! I know you're down there playing games! You can't hide forever. Clara is mine, and whatever you think you're protecting is already dead!""

Alexander’s voice crackled softly through Derek’s radio, echoing chillingly close. ""You're standing in my house, Loss. You're breathing my air. And your clock ran out five minutes ago.""

Before Derek could trace the signal, a series of automated security shutters slammed down across every exit of the main floor, sealing the doors and windows with reinforced titanium plates. The mansion transformed from a sprawling estate into an inescapable cage.

""What is this?!"" one of Derek’s remaining mercenaries shouted, firing a burst of bullets into the titanium door, only to watch them bounce harmlessly off the metal.

Derek’s face twisted with rage. He ripped the radio off his tactical vest and hurled it to the ground, crushing it beneath his boot. ""Blow the floor! Open up the basement access right now!""

Down in the catacombs, Alexander heard the muffled thuds of heavy explosives being planted near the primary cellar doors. A grim smile crossed his face as he pulled a detonator remote from his pocket, watching the live feeds of Derek’s men clustering directly above the secondary structural charge.

""Enjoy the fireworks,"" Alexander muttered, pressing the button.
