Chapter 4 - The Vanguard of Vengeance

The underground bunker hummed with the quiet tension of high-end server racks and emergency generators. On the curved wall of monitors, Derek Loss’s face loomed large, framed by the burning ruins of Alexander’s upper floor. The masked mercenaries he had brought with him were systematically clearing rooms, smashing antique furniture and tearing down priceless paintings in a calculated display of destruction and intimidation.
Clara clutched a woolen blanket around her shoulders, her eyes fixed on the screen. ""They're destroying everything... because of me,"" she whispered, her voice breaking. ""Alexander, you have to let me go out there. If I surrender to him, he'll leave you alone.""
Alexander didn't even glance at her as he strapped a tactical vest over his black shirt, loading dual sidearms with practiced, lethal efficiency. ""If you walk out those doors, he kills you within the hour, and then he hunts me down for sport,"" Alexander said calmly, racking the slide of a customized assault rifle. ""That is not an option.""
""But there are twelve of them, and only one of you!"" Clara cried, grabbing his arm.
Alexander stopped. He looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then raised his gaze to meet hers. There was no fear in his eyes—only a cold, consuming fury. ""You think I built an empire by letting thugs walk into my house and burn it down?"" He gently removed her hand from his arm. ""Stay in the panic room. Lock the biometric seal behind me. If I don't return in two hours, use the satellite communicator in the desk to call Marcus Vance.""
""Marcus? Your brother?"" Clara gasped. ""The federal prosecutor?""
""He'll know what to do,"" Alexander said flatly, turning toward the heavy steel bulkhead door that led to the escape tunnels.
""Alexander, wait!"" Clara called out, her heart hammering against her ribs.
He paused, looking back over his shoulder.
""Be careful,"" she whispered.
A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of Alexander’s lips. ""I always am.""
With a heavy metallic clang, the bulkhead door sealed shut behind him, plunging the bunker into an isolated silence. Clara sat alone in the dim light, staring at the monitors as Alexander slipped into the subterranean ventilation shafts of his own mansion, hunting the predators who thought they had cornered him.

On screen Camera 4 showed two mercenaries patrolling the wine cellar, their flashlights cutting through the dark. Suddenly, from the shadows above, a dark figure dropped soundlessly behind the lead guard, a gloved hand clamping over his mouth before a sharp snap echoed through the audio feed.
Derek Loss, watching from the foyer upstairs, suddenly froze as his radio crackled with static and silence.
