Chapter 13 - Blood and Betrayal

""Hello, nephew,"" Julian Vance said smoothly, lowering his gun slightly as he stepped over the ruined threshold of the study. His silver hair and refined posture contrasted sharply with the deadly intent in his eyes. ""You really should have stayed in Europe. You always were entirely too arrogant for your own good.""

Alexander pushed Clara gently behind him, raising his weapon with absolute precision, aiming straight for his uncle's chest. ""You're trespassing, Julian. And your little proxy here is about to go right back to a federal cage.""

Derek Loss stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Clara with a rabid, obsessive hatred. ""Shut your mouth, Vance! She's mine! She's always been mine, and nobody steals what belongs to Derek Loss!""

""She is not property, you psychopath,"" Alexander growled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

""Kill them both,"" Julian commanded coldly, raising his own weapon.

Before either side could fire, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind Julian shattered into a million glittering fragments as a heavy tactical assault drone crashed through, its automated strobe lights blinding everyone in the room.

Marcus Vance dropped down from the rappelling line attached to the drone, followed by a full squad of federal operatives who swarmed through the broken window.

""Drop your weapons! Federal agents!"" Marcus roared, his assault rifle leveled directly at Julian Vance.

Julian’s composure fractured instantly. Seeing his trap fall apart, he grabbed Derek by the collar and tried to drag him toward the private exit hallway. ""Move, you idiot! We're leaving!""

Derek, blinded by his obsessive rage toward Clara, violently shrugged Julian off. ""No! I'm going to finish what I started!""

With a feral roar, Derek lunged past Julian, sprinting directly toward Clara with the hunting knife raised high.

""Clara, watch out!"" Alexander shouted.

Time seemed to slow down. Clara didn't panic. Remembering Alexander’s words, she raised the compact pistol with both hands, took a steady breath, and pulled the trigger.

Bang.

The shot echoed thunderously through the study. Derek stumbled forward, dropping the knife as a bullet grazed his shoulder, before crashing hard against the mahogany desk, where federal agents swarmed him instantly, pinning him to the floor.

Julian Vance tried to raise his pistol to fire at Alexander, but Marcus was faster. A single shot from Marcus's sidearm knocked the gun from Julian's hand, sending it clattering across the floorboards.

Within seconds, both men were handcuffed and pinned to the ground. The smoke cleared, and the chaos subsided into a heavy, breathless silence.

Alexander rushed to Clara, pulling her into his arms and holding her tight against his chest. ""Are you alright? Did he touch you?""

Clara buried her face in his shoulder, her breathing ragged, but she shook her head. ""I'm okay. I'm okay.""
