Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dark

The distant shatter of glass downstairs sent a jolt of adrenaline through the bathroom. Clara froze, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she grabbed Alexander’s sleeve with bloody fingers. ""He’s here,"" she whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the words. ""Derek found me.""

Alexander stood up slowly, his towering frame radiating a cold, lethal fury. The hesitation was gone; the billionaire protector had awakened. Without a word, he stripped off his suit jacket, tossing it carelessly onto the marble vanity, and rolled up the sleeves of his crisp black shirt, revealing forearms corded with muscle. He reached into his inner pocket, his hand wrapping firmly around the cold steel of a concealed firearm.

""Stay here,"" Alexander commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. ""Do not move, no matter what you hear.""

""No, Alexander, you don't understand—he’s a monster, he’ll kill you!"" Clara sobbed, trying to pull herself up, but the gash on her leg flared with white-hot pain, sending her crashing back down to the floor.

Alexander paused at the doorway, turning his head just enough for her to see the lethal resolve burning in his dark eyes. ""Let him try.""

With feline grace, Alexander stepped out of the bathroom and into the dimly lit master bedroom. The heavy oak doors remained ajar, casting a long streak of light across the plush Persian rug. Downstairs, the heavy thud of boots echoed up the grand staircase, accompanied by rough, demanding laughter that chilled the blood. Derek Loss had breached the fortress.

Alexander moved into the shadows of the hallway, blending seamlessly into the dark wood paneling. He watched the top of the stairs, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. A pair of heavy boots crested the landing, followed by a broad-shouldered figure holding a heavy iron crowbar. Derek Loss was every bit the violent thug Clara had described—scars lining his neck, a predatory grin plastered across his face as he strolled through the multi-million-dollar estate as if he owned it.

""Come out, little bird,"" Derek called out, his raspy voice echoing through the opulent halls. ""You can't hide from me forever.""

Alexander stepped out from the shadows, blocking the hallway with a chilling, effortless authority. ""You're trespassing, Mr. Loss.""

Derek spun around, surprised for a fraction of a second before a sadistic smirk spread across his face. He gripped the crowbar tighter. ""Ah, the rich boss. Tell me, how much did you pay her to keep her mouth shut? Because she belongs to me.""

Alexander didn't blink. He raised the firearm with deadly precision, aiming straight for Derek's chest. ""She belongs to no one.""

Derek laughed, taking a slow step forward, completely underestimating the man before him. ""You think a gun scares me?""

May you like

""It should,"" Alexander replied coldly, pulling back the hammer with a sharp click that silenced the entire house.

Before Derek could lunge, a deafening explosion echoed from the back of the estate, blowing out the kitchen windows and plunging the upper floor into sudden, chaotic darkness.
