Chapter 5 - Returning to the Hearth

To break a cycle of fear, one must confront its source. Three days after the gala, Elena, Marcus, and Julian returned to the Vance Manor. The house stood silent, its grand stone facade imposing under the gray autumn sky. Victoria Vance met them in the foyer, her posture rigid, her eyes sharp with disapproval.
"You bring shame upon this family, Elena," Victoria said, her voice icy. "And Marcus, bringing your wild theories back here will not change reality."
"The reality is already out, Mother," Julian said, standing firmly between Victoria and Elena. For the first time in his life, he defied his mother's imposing authority. "We are going down to the old cellar today."
Victoria paled slightly, but stepped aside without another word.

The basement beneath the north wing was cold and damp. The air smelled of wet earth and old stone. As they descended the wooden stairs, the temperature dropped drastically. Elena felt a familiar chill run down her spine, but this time, she did not step back. She held a lantern high, illuminating the hidden door hidden behind a rack of old wine barrels—a door Marcus had found in the original blueprints.
