Chapter 12 - The Ace in the Hole

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Christian stared at Sterling, his face carved from stone, the trap closing in precisely as his enemies had planned. But before Christian could speak, the double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud bang. Jax strolled in, casually tossing a small, encrypted USB flash drive onto the table right in front of Sterling. It clattered against the porcelain coffee cups, coming to a halt against Sterling’s gold fountain pen. Sterling frowned, glancing up with disgust. ""What is the meaning of this intrusion? Security, remove this—""
""Save your breath, old man,"" Jax interrupted, pulling out a chair and sitting down backwards, resting his arms on the backrest with a cocky grin. ""That little drive contains every offshore transaction, shell company wire, and unauthorized asset liquidation you’ve been running behind the board's back for the last three years, Sterling. Siphoned straight from the subsidiary accounts you thought you deleted."" Sterling’s face drained of color, his aristocratic composure cracking instantly as his hands began to tremble slightly. He snatched the drive up, glaring at Jax. ""This is fabricated garbage! It won't hold up in any federal court!""

Christian straightened up, a cold, predatory smile finally touching his lips. He leaned over the table, pressing his advantage. ""It won't need a federal court, Arthur. I've already forwarded an encrypted copy to the federal securities commission and every major news outlet in the city, set on an automated timer for 9:00 AM if I don't manually override it."" Christian slammed his hand onto the table, making the crystal water glasses jump. ""You wanted to play corporate warfare? You picked the wrong opponent."" Sterling stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over backward, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as he realized he had been checkmated entirely.
Emma stepped forward from the shadows of the doorway, her presence commanding every eye in the room. She walked right up to the end of the table, looking down at the disgraced corporate raider with absolute calm. ""You thought a housekeeper was a weak link, Mr. Sterling,"" Emma said softly, her voice echoing off the glass walls. ""Turns out we see everything—including the trash you tried to sweep under the rug."" Sterling looked around the room, realizing the other board members were backing away from him in horror and self-preservation. Defeated, he grabbed his briefcase, spat out a curse, and stormed out of the boardroom, slamming the heavy doors behind him. The battle for the empire was won, but as Christian turned to look at Emma, a deeper, more personal storm was still brewing.
