Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The morning sun filtered weakly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the master bedroom, offering no warmth to the sterile luxury that now served as Emma’s prison. She sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, wrapped in a silk robe that felt more like a straitjacket. Every door in the penthouse was electronically locked from the outside; her phone had vanished, replaced by a sleek, uncustomizable device that only dialed three pre-programmed numbers: Christian, security, and the estate physician. She was no longer just a housekeeper under suspicion—she was the incubator for a billionaire’s heir, guarded by a security detail that rotated every four hours without fail.
Footsteps echoed softly down the private corridor, and the heavy oak door swung open. Christian entered, rolling up his sleeves, having already conducted a morning meeting from his home office. He looked pristine, untouchable, and entirely unaffected by the emotional earthquake he had triggered less than twenty-four hours ago. He placed a small leather folio on the mahogany bedside table alongside a tray containing a prenatal vitamin and a glass of sparkling water. ""Eat,"" he ordered simply, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest. Emma didn't look at the tray. Her voice was raspy from hours of crying. ""What happens to me, Christian? Do I just stay here like a piece of valuable art until I pop out your baby, and then you toss me back to the streets?""
Christian pushed off the doorframe, closing the distance between them in three long strides. He gripped her chin gently yet firmly, forcing her to meet his intense gaze. ""You stay here because it is the safest place for you and my child,"" he replied, his tone softening just a fraction—enough to be terrifying. ""You think this is a punishment, Emma? Consider it protection. The moment word gets out that an ordinary housekeeper is carrying the sole heir to the Vance enterprise, enemies I haven't thought about in years will come out of the woodwork. I am keeping you close because I don't lose what is mine."" He dropped his hand and turned toward the door, pausing just before the threshold. ""Dr. Hayes will be here at noon. Wear something decent."" As the heavy door clicked shut behind him, Emma clutched her stomach, realizing with a sinking heart that the real nightmare had only just begun.
