Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Past

The silence in the penthouse suite felt heavier than lead. Emma struggled to pull her hands away, but Christian’s grip remained unyielding, a steel shackle wrapped around her wrists. His dark eyes searched her face, mapping every micro-expression of terror, seeking a crack in her defenses. ""Look at me, Emma,"" he commanded, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal intimacy that made her skin crawl. She refused, keeping her gaze fixed on the floor where a single droplet of her tear had landed. How had it come to this? Just months ago, she was simply another face in the crowd, a girl working hard to pay off her mother's mounting medical debts, accepting a position at the elite estate to keep her head above water. But wealth like Christian’s had a gravity of its own, pulling everyone into its orbit—and crushing those who got too close.

Christian shifted his weight, his tall frame blocking the only exit from the bathroom. He remembered the exact night the walls between them had first blurred, a night buried under an avalanche of corporate stress, heavy rain, and a bottle of expensive scotch. He hadn't expected to care for the quiet housekeeper who stayed late to finish the grand library, and she certainly hadn't expected the powerful CEO to look at her with anything other than cold indifference. Yet, lines had been crossed in the shadows of the mansion, lines written in passion and paid for in secrecy. Now, looking at the white plastic stick resting innocently on the marble counter, Christian felt a foreign emotion spike in his chest: absolute, possessive fury.

""You thought you could hide this from me?"" Christian asked, his thumb tracing a harsh circle against the back of her hand. ""You thought you could carry my blood out of this house and pretend none of this happened?"" Emma finally snapped, pulling her chin up, her eyes blazing through her tears. ""You don't own me, Christian! And you certainly don't own what's inside me!"" A dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips, cold and humorless. ""Everything in my world belongs to me, Emma. Especially my legacy."" He stood up slowly, towering over her once more, his phone sliding out of his inner pocket with a slick metallic click. Before Emma could lunge forward to stop him, his thumb pressed against the screen, dialing a number that would change the trajectory of their lives forever. ""Prepare the private clinic,"" he spoke into the device, his eyes never leaving her pale face. ""We are checking in tonight.""
