Chapter 14 - Foundations of Glass

Six months later, the penthouse had undergone a complete transformation. The cold, sterile marble and minimalist black decor had been softened with warm lighting, cozy furnishings, and, much to Christian's initial corporate horror, a nursery painted in soft shades of sage and cream overlooking the endless skyline. The corporate media storm had long since blown over; Sterling was facing federal indictments for securities fraud, and Elena Vance had taken an extended, permanent sabbatical touring European monasteries, realizing her son’s grip on the empire—and his stubborn devotion to Emma—was unbreakable. Emma, now heavily pregnant with a soft, radiant glow, sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the window, reading a book on early childhood development while the afternoon sun washed over her.
The private elevator chime chimed softly, signaling Christian’s return from the corporate headquarters downtown. Instead of his usual stiff corporate demeanor, Christian entered the penthouse loosening his tie and tossing his suit jacket over the back of the sofa, looking relaxed in a simple charcoal button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He walked straight into the nursery, dropping down on one knee in front of Emma’s chair just as he had done on the bathroom floor months ago—though this time, there was no terror, no tears, and no threats. He placed a warm, gentle palm against her rounded belly, smiling softly as a tiny kick met his hand from the inside. ""He's restless today,"" Christian murmured, a genuine, soft smile gracing his handsome face that few outside these walls ever got to see.
Emma smiled down at him, running her fingers through his dark wavy hair. ""He takes after his father. Impatient, stubborn, and convinced he runs the world."" Christian laughed quietly, looking up into her eyes with an expression of profound, unshakable devotion. ""Well, he gets his stubbornness from his mother, that's for sure."" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box, placing it gently on her lap. Emma looked down at the box in surprise, her breath catching. She opened it to reveal a stunning vintage ring featuring a brilliant emerald surrounded by delicate diamonds—a family heirloom that Christian’s mother had abandoned in her hasty retreat, which Christian had reclaimed and redesigned specifically for her. ""I didn't lock you in a cage this time,"" Christian whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he took her hand. ""Emma Davis... will you marry me, and build a real empire together?""
