Chapter 6 - Emerald and Ash

The grand dining room on the penthouse's top floor echoed with the clinking of crystal glassware and polite, calculated laughter. Emma descended the sweeping spiral staircase, the emerald silk gown pooling around her ankles like liquid glass. Every eye in the room turned toward her. The senior managing partners—men in their fifties and sixties with cold smiles and expensive watches—stopped mid-conversation. Christian stood at the head of the long mahogany table, looking immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo. As she reached the bottom step, Christian extended his hand, his fingers wrapping firmly around hers, pulling her effortlessly to his side. ""Gentlemen,"" he announced, his voice rich and commanding, cutting through the ambient noise of the room. ""Allow me to introduce Ms. Emma Davis. The newest, and most vital, addition to the Vance household.""
The silence that followed was suffocating. Arthur Sterling, the eldest board member and a man known for his ruthless corporate raiding, adjusted his glasses, his gaze sweeping over Emma with thinly veiled disdain. ""A housekeeper, Christian? I wasn't aware our internal human resources had been upgraded to domestic hospitality at the executive level."" Laughter rippled softly around the table, sharp and condescending. Emma felt her cheeks burn, the humiliation threatening to swallow her whole. She looked up at Christian, expecting him to defend her, or at least issue a cold warning to Sterling. Instead, Christian’s expression remained terrifyingly neutral, his thumb tracing a slow, hypnotic circle on the back of her hand. He was testing her. He wanted to see if she would break under the collective weight of the corporate wolves.
Emma took a deep, steadying breath, letting the anger inside her override the fear. She pulled her hand slightly away from Christian’s grip, stepping fractionally forward so she wasn't hiding behind his shadow. She offered Sterling a cool, polite smile that didn't reach her eyes. ""Mr. Sterling, it’s true my previous title was domestic,"" she said, her voice clear, steady, and carrying across the entire silent dining room. ""However, history suggests that those who clean the house often know where all the bodies are buried. It’s an honor to finally meet the men who manage the dust."" A sharp intake of breath echoed from across the table. For a split second, Sterling’s jaw dropped in absolute shock before hardening into a scowl. Christian didn't say a word, but a sudden, brilliant flash of fierce amusement lit up his dark eyes. He leaned down slightly, his lips brushing against her ear. ""Well played, my love,"" he murmured, a genuine, dangerous thrill vibrating in his tone. But the victory was short-lived; across the room, the heavy double doors began to swing open, revealing an unexpected visitor who made Christian’s entire body tense like a coiled spring.
