Chapter 8 - Cracks in the Armor

The aftermath of Elena’s departure left the dining room in a state of stunned paralysis. The board members muttered hasty excuses, packing their briefcases and shuffling out of the penthouse within minutes, unwilling to be caught in the crossfire of a family civil war. Within half an hour, the grand room was completely empty save for the two of them. Christian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the glittering skyline of the city, a glass of amber scotch untouched in his hand. His shoulders were tense, the heavy fabric of his tuxedo straining against his frame. Emma walked over slowly, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. She stopped a few feet away from him, the adrenaline of the confrontation finally wearing off, leaving a hollow ache in her chest.

""You didn't have to defend me like that,"" Emma said softly, breaking the heavy silence. ""You could have just thrown me under the bus to appease your mother and your precious board."" Christian didn't turn around immediately. When he finally did, his expression was an unreadable mask, though the storm in his dark eyes gave him away. He set the glass down on the sill with a sharp clink. ""Throw you under the bus?"" he repeated, his voice dangerously low. ""You still don't understand, do you, Emma? From the moment that positive test touched your hands, you became tethered to me. No one attacks what belongs to Christian Vance—not my mother, not the board, not God himself."" He closed the distance between them, his presence overwhelming. ""My mother thinks you're a gold-digger. She thinks you trapped me.""

Emma scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. ""And what do you think, Christian? Do you think I planned this? Do you think I wanted to be locked up in this golden cage, treated like a prized mare?"" Christian reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing lightly across her skin. His touch was surprisingly tender, contrasting sharply with the intensity of his words. ""I think you're terrified,"" he murmured, his voice softening into a raw, gravelly whisper. ""Just as terrified as I am. Because for the first time in my life, I have something that money can't buy, and someone can easily take away from me."" He leaned his forehead against hers, closing his eyes. For a fleeting second, the billionaire tycoon vanished, leaving only a man drowning in his own fears. But the moment shattered when a sudden, violent vibration buzzed from the secure phone on the side table. Christian’s eyes snapped open, turning hard as steel again. He checked the screen, and his face drained of color. ""It's Marcus,"" he muttered, picking up the device. ""The private clinic downtown... it's been compromised.""
