Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Corridor

By noon, the atmosphere in the penthouse had shifted from a tense standoff to a clinical operation. Dr. Hayes, a woman in her late fifties with sharp eyes and an aura of absolute discretion, packed her ultrasound equipment back into its metallic case. She offered Emma a sympathetic, professional smile. ""Physically, you and the baby are doing remarkably well, Ms. Davis. Just keep your stress levels down, which I know is easier said than done in this house."" Once the doctor was escorted out by security, Emma walked over to the grand mahogany desk in the corner of the bedroom, her fingers trailing over the polished wood. She needed an exit strategy. The golden cage was impenetrable from the main doors, but she remembered something from her days cleaning the executive levels: the service elevator shaft connected to the subterranean maintenance tunnels, used exclusively by staff during emergencies.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the subtle click of the smart lock. The door opened a crack, but before Christian could step inside, a muffled voice from the hallway caught her attention. It was Marcus, Christian’s head of security, speaking in a low, urgent tone into a secure radio. ""Sir, the corporate board is sniffing around. They caught wind that you've quarantined the penthouse. If they find out about the girl or the pregnancy before the quarterly merger goes public, the stock value will crater."" Emma froze, pressing her back against the cool wall near the hallway entrance. Christian’s voice came back through the open door, sharp as a razor. ""Let them look. Divert their attention to the European expansion portfolio. Anyone who digs too deep into my private quarters gets blacklisted before the sun sets. I will not have my family compromised.""
Family. The word echoed mockingly in Emma's mind. To him, she wasn't a partner, a lover, or even a person—she was a component of his legacy, a variable to be managed, controlled, and protected like a corporate asset. But hearing about the board added a desperate new layer to her calculations: if Christian was vulnerable because of this pregnancy, it meant she had leverage. She wasn't just a trapped bird anymore; she was sitting on a powder keg that could blow up the entire Vance empire. As Christian’s heavy footsteps approached the bedroom, Emma quickly composed her face, stepping away from the wall. The door swung open, and Christian stepped in, his expression shifting from corporate warlord to attentive warden the second his eyes met hers. ""Did the doctor give you a clean bill of health?"" he asked, stepping closer to inspect her face for any lingering tears. ""Yes,"" Emma replied, holding his gaze with a terrifying new calmness. ""We're doing great. But tell me, Christian... what happens when your board finds out about us?""
