Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Ghost

The doors glided open to reveal Elena Vance, Christian’s formidable, high-society mother, draped in vintage diamonds and an expression of pure arctic frost. The temperature in the dining room plummeted instantly. Sterling and the other board members quickly stood up, offering respectful nods to the matriarch who still held significant voting power within the enterprise. Elena didn't acknowledge them; her cold, piercing blue eyes locked directly onto Emma standing beside her son in an emerald gown that screamed defiance. ""I heard rumors that a stray cat had wandered into my son's penthouse and decided to make herself comfortable,"" Elena’s voice cut through the room like shattered glass, elegant yet dripping with venom. ""I see the rumors were entirely understated.""
Christian stepped forward, placing his body partially in front of Emma, a protective yet fiercely territorial barrier. ""Mother, this is none of your concern. You weren't invited to tonight's dinner."" Elena let out a dry, humorless laugh, her gaze darting past Christian to fix itself firmly on Emma’s slightly rounded stomach—a detail barely noticeable under the silk drapery of the gown, but glaringly obvious to a woman who knew her son's habits too well. ""Not my concern? Christian, you are playing a very dangerous game. Bringing an ordinary working girl into our world is one thing; letting her anchor herself to your bloodline is a mistake this family will not survive. I checked the corporate registries this morning. A pregnancy clause automatically triggers a succession review if unapproved by the board."" She stepped closer, her eyes flashing with malice. ""Tell me, my dear... how much did Christian pay you to keep your mouth shut, or are you hoping to cash out when the baby arrives?""
The silence in the room was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Emma felt the blood rush to her ears, the insult stinging sharper than any physical blow. She opened her mouth to snap back, but Christian beat her to it. His voice was no longer conversational; it was the chilling, lethal snarl of a predator defending its den. ""Watch your tone, Mother,"" Christian warned, taking a slow, menacing step forward until he towered over her. ""Emma stays. The child stays. And if anyone on this board, or in this family, attempts to interfere with my household again, I will strip them of their shares before the market opens tomorrow morning."" Elena flinched, recognizing the absolute ruthlessness in her son’s eyes. She smoothed down her lapels, regaining her icy composure, though her glare at Emma remained lethal. ""We shall see, Christian,"" she whispered, turning sharply on her heel. ""A house built on secrets always collapses from within."" As the doors slammed shut behind her, the dinner party was ruined, but the war had officially begun.
