Chapter 9 - The Siege at Dawn

The penthouse was plunged into sudden darkness as Christian cut the main power grid to mask their thermal signatures. ""Move,"" Christian ordered, grabbing Emma’s hand and dragging her toward the private elevator hidden behind the study's mahogany bookshelves. The luxury of the evening was gone, replaced by the brutal reality of the corporate underworld. ""Who's coming for us?"" Emma asked, her voice shaking as she stumbled over the hem of her emerald gown, kicking off her heels to run barefoot across the hardwood floors. ""Sterling and my mother,"" Christian replied grimly, punching a security override code into the keypad. ""They didn't just want to intimidate you at dinner; they sent a tactical team to raid my medical files at the clinic to prove the pregnancy isn't viable or to force a termination before the board meeting tomorrow.""
The elevator doors slid open, revealing the subterranean maintenance tunnel dimly lit by emergency red lights. Christian pulled her inside, shielding her with his broad frame as the metallic cage descended into the depths of the building. The air down here smelled of concrete, dust, and old oil. As the doors opened to the underground parking garage, the sharp sound of gunfire echoed through the concrete cavern. Pop-pop-pop. Sparks flew off a nearby steel pillar as a bullet ricocheted dangerously close to their heads. Emma screamed, ducking instinctively, but Christian didn't hesitate. He drew a sleek, matte-black Walther PPK from his shoulder holster with terrifying ease, pushing Emma behind a reinforced concrete structural column. ""Stay here. Do not move an inch,"" he ordered, his voice steady as a rock amidst the chaos.
Emma peeked out from behind the pillar, her breath catching in her throat. Two masked men dressed in tactical gear were advancing across the garage toward their position, their assault rifles raised. Before Christian could fire, a third figure emerged from the shadows behind the attackers—a tall, heavily tattooed man with long dark hair and a leather vest, wielding a heavy steel wrench with brutal efficiency. With a single, savage swing, the biker blindsided the first operative, sending him crashing into a parked SUV, while Christian swiftly neutralized the second with a precise shot to the shoulder. Within seconds, the garage fell deadly silent again, save for the ringing in Emma's ears and the heavy breathing of the two men standing over the unconscious intruders. Christian lowered his weapon, his dark eyes widening in shock as he looked at the unexpected savior standing under the flickering emergency light. ""Jax?"" Christian breathed out, disbelief coloring his usually controlled voice. The tattooed biker wiped a streak of sweat from his forehead, glaring at Christian with a mixture of old resentment and grim camaraderie. ""You always were a magnet for trouble, Vance,"" Jax growled, his voice deep and raspy. ""And it looks like you finally stepped in it up to your neck.""
