Chapter 13 - Ashes and Embers

With Sterling gone, the remaining board members hastily mumbled their apologies and filed out of the room like scolded children, leaving Christian, Emma, and Jax alone in the cavernous boardroom. The morning sun was now fully up, casting long, golden beams across the glass-paneled floor. Jax stood up, stretching his tattooed arms with a loud yawn. ""Well, looks like your corporate circus is back in order, Vance. My work here is done. I've got a bike to fix and miles of open highway calling my name."" Christian walked over to Jax, extending a hand—a rare gesture of genuine respect between two men who came from entirely different worlds. Jax looked at the hand for a moment before gripping it firmly, shaking it once. ""Thanks, old friend,"" Christian said quietly. Jax smirked, nodding toward Emma. ""Take care of her, Christian. Girls like that only come around once in a lifetime, and they don't stay if you keep them locked in cages."" With a final wave, Jax turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the heavy oak doors swinging behind him.

The silence returned, but this time it wasn't suffocating; it was heavy with unspoken truths. Christian turned slowly to face Emma, who was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city she had helped save. He walked across the room, his footsteps silent against the plush carpet, and stopped just behind her, hesitant to touch her without permission for the first time since this madness began. ""You saved my empire today,"" Christian said, his voice uncharacteristically vulnerable. Emma turned around slowly, her hazel eyes meeting his dark, intense gaze. ""I didn't save your empire, Christian. I saved my child's future. There's a big difference.""

Christian stepped closer, his hand rising to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair. ""I know I locked you up. I know I acted like a dictator,"" he confessed, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. ""I was terrified of losing the only real thing I've ever had in my life. Everything else—the money, the towers, the board—it's all glass and steel. You and this child... you're the only things that are real."" Emma searched his face, seeing the raw honesty buried beneath layers of trauma and power. She placed her hand over his heart, feeling it hammer frantically against his ribs. ""Then stop treating me like a prisoner, Christian,"" she whispered, her voice steady and clear. ""If we're going to do this, we do it as equals. No cages. No secrets."" Christian closed his eyes, pulling her into his arms and burying his face in her hair, holding her as if she were the only thing keeping him anchored to the earth. ""No cages,"" he promised fiercely against her skin. ""I swear it.""
